Let me preface my review by saying that I discovered Maddy Elruna through one of her posts on a professional Tarot readers facebook page. From there, I went to her website, felt very much connected to the way she works, and immediately signed up for her emails! One of which offered this book for free for a limited time, which I was happy to accept.This is just a lovely Tarot book. I read it in one sitting and was sorry to have it end! This book does not include a walk-through of the individual card meanings; as Maddy emphasizes in her book, ultimately you will impart your own meanings to the cards, and I believe she has other books that help you to do that. Instead, this book is more of a Tarot companion, as if you had a knowledgeable, experienced friend sitting with you, answering your questions, and guiding you in the use of the cards. In this, it succeeds beautifully.
In a friendly (and at times humorous) question and answer format, Maddy uses her depth of experience to answer the questions most beginning Tarot readers will have. Her emphasis here is not so much on technical issues, though she does not shy away from that. Rather, her focus is on the art of reading. How to connect with the client (one way: by doing a preliminary reading on their past or present, which they can verify as accurate and which enables you to get a sense of the person, and then proceed with the reading for their question). How to use potentially "negative" readings to prepare for, soften, or even eliminate the problems they foretell (for this Maddy offers an amusing example from her own life!) Why she prefers at least a three-card spread to a single card for a daily reading (hint: it's hard to tell a story with one card!) The importance of intention in a reading. What do do when a reading seems to make no sense-- something we can all relate to as Tarot readers, and for which she offers such simple, helpful advice. And there is so much more.
The beginning Tarot reader-- and even the experienced reader-- will gain so much from reading this book. You will come away knowing "I can do this." Maddy gives a number of techniques and tips, but not so many that the reader is overwhelmed. Upon reading this book you will feel that you are on secure ground to begin doing readings and developing your personal style, or to breathe new life into your practice if you are already reading.

Found this to be a great start for a new beginner. Maddy's advice is short but full of great insight and information from card selection to setting up rituals and intentions.
